It's the most wonderful time of the year, according to Andy Williams, and we couldn't be more excited! Many of our staff are traveling, visiting friends and relatives, and taking part in holiday activities this month. Something that many of us are wary of is how we're fueling our bodies.
Digestion and mental health are heavily linked; when one isn't optimal, it often effects the other. Especially during the holiday season when much of our time is fast-paced and potentially stressful (whether it's happy stress or or not), this is important to remember. In order to feel your best this holiday season, you will want to watch what you're eating.
In this, the digital age, we have resources readily available so that we may substitute ingredients that don't agree with us rather than opting out of our favourite treats altogether. With the prominence of special diets, there are many blogs out there which offer delicious alternatives to dairy, gluten, meat, etc. that are equally delicious to their originals. Whether you are simply substituting dairy-milk for almond in your favourite hot cocoa or trying out a gluten-free dinner roll recipe, our guts (and your mind) will thank you if you don't do well with these.
Additionally, as outlined in the teachings of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the consumption of many foods can be attributed with symptoms that one normally wouldn't connect. For example, dairy (but especially cheese) are these things for me. Consuming them contributes to excess heat in the body, which in my case, prevents Qi from flowing freely, thus leading to anxiety. If you think you may be suffering from symptoms related to your diet, seeing an Acupuncturist can be very helpful in connecting the dots.
Outside of what you are consuming, it's also important to remember how much you are consuming. When eating turkey dinner, it's easy to just dump food on your plate and keep going. This year, try using a portion guide to plate-out exactly what you need, then go from there. Besides, leftovers are the best part anyway!
